| Welcome Durham, North Carolina. In the summer of 2004, Howard Staab went in for a routine physical and came out with a broken heart valve. He was 53 — a carpenter with a ponytail who loved his bicycle — and he had no health insurance. The local hospital asked for a $50,000 deposit before it would even admit him. The full bill, they warned, could run as high as $200,000. For a carpenter, that isn’t a bill. It’s the end of the conversation. But around that time, his partner Maggi Grace’s son came home from a summer in India. He was a medical student at Stanford… and India had left an impression. So Howard did something crazy. He flew about 7,500 miles to New Delhi. At the Escorts Heart Institute (now part of Fortis), a surgeon named Naresh Trehan — who once taught at NYU’s medical school — replaced the failing valve with one taken from a pig. And the total bill, including round-trip airfare and a side trip to the Taj Mahal, came to about… $10,000. “The Indian doctors, they did such a fine job here, and took care of us so well. I would do it again.” — Howard Staab, Durham, NC, via The Washington Post Heart surgery, then and now $200,000 → $10,000 Durham estimate, 2004 New Delhi, all-in with flights Deposit Durham asked for before admission $50,000 Heart bypass in the US today, uninsured $70,000–$150,000 Heart bypass in India today, accredited hospital $4,500–$8,000 Sources: The Washington Post (2004) for Staab’s figures; Medical Tourism Association 2026 guides for current bypass prices. In other words, he paid one-twentieth of the American estimate and saw one of the wonders of the world on the way home. Howard was one of the first Americans to make that trip. Back then, it made the newspapers. Today, an estimated 21 million people a year cross a border for medical care. And India is still the price floor for heart surgery. A bypass at an accredited hospital there now starts around $4,500 to $8,000\. In the US, the same operation runs $70,000 to $150,000 without insurance. Interesting… The math that saved Howard still works. Most people just don’t know it exists. That’s what we’re here for.
