| Health tourists1.4MTurkey, 2025Health revenue\~$3BTurkey, 2025AccreditationDec 31TÜSKA deadline Trending Ankara, May 21. Turkey’s top administrative court sided with the Health Ministry that day, and a rule that had been frozen for five months came back to life. Almost nobody in America noticed. But if you’re thinking about surgery in Istanbul or Antalya, it may be the most useful rule change in years. When a foreign patient has a surgical procedure in an operating room, the clinic must buy complication insurance for that patient. The clinic arranges it, not you. In other words, if something goes wrong that isn’t anyone’s fault, there’s money set aside to fix it. What does that look like? The policies we’ve seen cover revision surgery, a hospital readmission and emergency treatment. Some add an economy flight back to Turkey and a hotel while you recover. Most last six months after the operation. One sample policy pays about €5,000 for complications after cosmetic or weight-loss surgery, plus up to €1,000 toward the flight back. But read the fine print… This isn’t malpractice cover. It won’t pay because you dislike how your nose turned out, and Botox and fillers aren’t included. So why now? Turkey is a giant. About 1.4 million people traveled there for healthcare in 2025 and spent roughly $3 billion, according to USHAŞ, the country’s international health agency. And it has had bad headlines. The British government says it knows of seven British nationals who died in Turkey in 2025 after medical procedures. Interesting timing… The new rules arrived in April 2025\. Clinics and agents must be authorized and listed on the government’s HealthTürkiye portal, and agents need 24/7 call centers in at least two foreign languages. Hospitals serving foreign patients must also earn TÜSKA, Turkey’s national accreditation, by the end of this year. How Turkey’s new rules unfoldedApr 26, 2025New health tourism rules published Dec 25, 2025A court freezes the insurance requirement Jan 1, 2026Planned start date for insurance (on hold) May 21, 2026Freeze lifted after Health Ministry appeal Dec 31, 2026Deadline for TÜSKA hospital accreditationSources: Turkish Official Gazette, Council of State rulings, Turkish Ministry of Health. The insurance piece was meant to start on January 1\. A court froze it on December 25, after legal challenges from the Turkish Medical Association and a private hospitals group. Then in May, a higher panel of the same court lifted the freeze. The main case is still open, though. And no official start date has been confirmed. Will it stick? I have no idea. Courts move slowly, and so do insurers. We’ll see. “We prioritize quality for the development of our sector and continue to raise our service standards not based on price but on patient safety and satisfaction.” Turkish Ministry of Health, April 2025 Here’s what I’d do before paying any deposit. Ask the clinic one question: is my procedure covered by complication insurance, and can I see the policy? Then look the clinic up on HealthTürkiye yourself. If they hesitate on either one, keep shopping. A good clinic will have both answers ready. Reader Review Vera Clinic, Istanbul Hair transplant · September 2026 · [trustpilot.com](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/veraclinic.net) Jack Murphy flew from Ireland to Istanbul for a hair transplant at Vera Clinic, and he went for the cheaper package. “Vera Clinic done a fantastic job with my hair transplant,” he wrote on Trustpilot in September. His package covered the hotel and an airport pick-up, plus a discount on his flight. Even on the lower tier, he wrote, “it still felt like I had a premium deal.” Vera Clinic sells fixed-price packages instead of charging per graft. Its entry FUE package is listed at €3,200 and includes PRP, laser therapy, three nights in a five-star hotel and transfers. The top packages run to €5,990\. The clinic says it has treated more than 40,000 patients, and it holds a 4.8 rating from 1,889 reviews on Trustpilot. One thing to ask before you book: whether your procedure falls under Turkey’s complication insurance rule. We couldn’t find it mentioned on the clinic’s website. Jack M., Ireland Quick Reads Trend Americans Getting Treated in South Korea Jumped 70% Last Year South Korea treated 2.01 million foreign patients in 2025, the first time it has passed two million, according to its Ministry of Health and Welfare. That’s up from 1.17 million in 2024\. Americans made up 8.6% of the total, about 173,000 patients, up 70.4% in a single year. But most of those visits weren’t surgery. More than 62% went to dermatology clinics, and 11.2% had plastic surgery. And 87.2% of all patients were treated in Seoul. In other words, skin clinics are driving this boom. Destination Malaysia Wants Almost Four Times the Medical Tourism Money by 2030 About 1.84 million healthcare travelers went to Malaysia in 2025 and spent about RM3.34 billion, according to the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council. The target is RM12 billion a year by 2030\. To get there, the country has extended its Visit Malaysia campaign, which includes medical tourism, into 2027\. Its “Healing Meets Hospitality” push now runs through a network of more than 80 partner hospitals and clinics. Most of the marketing targets Asia, the Middle East and Africa for now. Rankings vary, but Tourism Malaysia puts the country among the world’s top six medical tourism destinations. Savings Spotlight British Patients Are Quietly Heading to Lithuania Nordorthopaedics, a private clinic in Lithuania, says its British patients have more than doubled since before the pandemic, to over 3,500 this year, according to The Telegraph. Some orthopedic and cosmetic procedures there can cost 40% to 70% less than private care in Britain, depending on the procedure and provider. Lithuania also has 4.6 practicing doctors per 1,000 people, above the OECD average of 3.9\. We haven’t seen procedure-by-procedure prices yet, and those savings are measured against British private care, not US prices. This is one to watch. |
